I started Gwyneth Jones’ Spirit at the wrong time, or at least in the wrong headspace. The edited pair are available and, more specifically, available for free today on .uk! Divine Endurance was the first novel published under her own name, in 1984. Gwyneth Jones has revised her first sf novel, Divine Endurance, collating it with its companion novel Flowerdust. Equally, if a work worthy of nomination isn’t on that list, consider it your personal responsibility to nominate it so that it is. Don’t take for granted that if your favourite sf book, short story, work of non-fiction, or artwork is on that list that it will receive enough nominations to make the shortlists. BSFA members should nominate early and often! Works currently nominated are available to peruse here. The deadline for the BSFA Awards Nominations is January 13, 2013. Vector 272 should follow a month or two later, along with the BSFA Award Booklet. Thanks to the assistance of yet another layout volunteer, Vector 271, the last issue of 2012, will be coming out in January 2013, along with a guest-edited version of Focus.

Ostensibly, I left because my ex had cheated on me. I was called “fat”, “worthless,” “stupid,” “bitch,” and probably lots of other names that I now choose to forget. The abuse was both emotional and physical. And I consider myself to be strong and independent.įor nearly seven years, I endured abuse. I also consider myself to be resourceful, even scrappy. In fact, I have been told I am quite intelligent. In fact, I had a pretty good family life. No, I did not grow up with parents who abused me in any way. Somehow, I found myself in an abusive relationship. I had thought that I was lucky to find love at a young age, and figured I was set for life. I had gotten married at the relatively young age of 22. However, sometimes it was also a literal prison. Sometimes this was only a metaphorical prison. Nine years ago (almost to this very date, in fact), I began a journey.įor seven years, I was trapped in a prison. The SEALs were tasked with establishing covert observation posts to call in air strikes on al Qaeda positions in the infamous Shah-i-Khot Valley close to the Afghan-Pakistan border.Īnaconda was designed to engage large numbers of foreign al Qaeda fighters who had fled to the valley after the overthrow of their hosts, the Taliban government and the later battle of Tora Bora in December 2001 which forced many of the foreign fighters toward the border and into the Shah-i-Khot, a traditional refuge of mujahideen in the 1980s. In the early morning hours of March 4, 2002, a reconnaissance team of US Navy SEALs from the Tier One Naval Special Warfare Development Group attached to Joint Special Operations Task Force 11 attempted to infiltrate onto an Afghan mountain peak in support of what was then the largest operation conducted by US forces since Vietnam, Operation Anaconda. It is a general tendency of consciousness to ‘spread the attention too thinly’ and, like an over-excited child with too many toys on Christmas Day, the result is nervous exhaustion.” It would not be inaccurate to say that all human beings live in a state of ‘vigilance’ and anxiety that is far above the level they actually need for vital efficiency. The point to observe here is that although hypertension may not be necessary, it is as widespread as the common cold. It is the result of ignorance, of bad management of our vital economy. However, it is not a necessary and inescapable price. Hypertension is the price we pay for the symphonies of Beethoven, the novels of Balzac, the advances in medical knowledge that prevent children dying of smallpox. And if the inhabitants of some Amazon village are ‘closer to nature’ than New Yorkers, this is usually at the cost of dirt and ignorance and inconvenience. The farm labourer going to work is as likely to ignore his surroundings as the harassed car salesman. It is a disease of consciousness-that is, of being human. “Now, although hypertension is accentuated by modern civilisation, it is not specifically a disease of civilisation. RELATED: 'Vampire Academy' Images Tease Rose/Dimitri and St. It’s a fresh, tantalizing take on vampires and those who protect their secrets. It may be a book adaptation, but it isn’t part of an existing on-screen IP, or a true remake of something that came before it. Particularly because it is so fresh and new. Regardless of potential comparisons, Vampire Academy is easily in the running as one of the best new shows of the year. With the swirl of court rivalry and the pulse of regality, there are elements of Vampire Academy that inspire far-off memories of Kindred: The Embraced, while the romantic tension, interpersonal drama, and the bonds of friendship and responsibility could easily rival fan-favorites like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It takes aspects from the books that I loved and pushes those plot points to the next level, creating something that new audiences can really sink their teeth into. I will always hold the novel series close to my heart, but eight episodes into Peacock’s new series, and I’m ready to proclaim it as one of the best book-to-series adaptations that I’ve ever seen. The Vampire Academy trades a rural Montana school complex for a stunning castle in an isolated region of Europe, and trades daylight trips to the Macy’s and Target in Missoula for the ostentatious wardrobe befitting of a secret society of vampiric nobility. For while Maria Sibylla Merian (indeed) was regarded with suspicion by some if not even many of her neighbours and acquaintances, she also did not have quite as tough and as problematic a time as portrayed either in the historical note or in the narrative itself (and actually had a very supportive family). Maria Sibylla Merian lived in the 17th and early 18th century, and while there definitely was still quite a bit of rampant superstition especially regarding insects and other non vertebrates (and so-called spontaneous generation, with insects and worms supposedly generating out of mud and the like), there was also a great deal more openness than in, say, the Middle Ages (and why the Summer Birds book description actually places Merian in the Middle Ages, or at least seems to, I will NEVER even remotely understand and accept). And while for the most part, I have quite enjoyed Margarita Engle's Summer Birds, I do and with considerable annoyance find that there is a rather problematic lack of historical accuracy portrayed at times. When I heard that there actually exists a picture book fictional (auto)biography of the girlhood of famous German naturalist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), I immediately purchased a copy for my personal library. |
